God Is Good

“You are forgiving and good, O Lord,

abounding in love to all who call to you.”

–Psalm 86:5

As children, many of us learn to pray at mealtimes. “God is great. God is good. Let us thank Him for our food. Amen.” We continue to teach this prayer to children, yet many of us struggle to believe the words we are praying. We believe He is great. We are thankful for His forgiveness. Those are good things, but is God really good?

In the Garden, Adam and Eve were tempted to eat of the fruit of the tree because they believed that God was withholding something good from them. “The tree looks good for the eating. Why would God keep something good from us?” They believed the lie, and their actions brought death to the human race. Over and over again, God created and said “it was good.” His creation was good because God is good; and God is good yesterday, today, and forever.

We can choose to keep believing the lie. If God is withholding good from us, then we have to work hard and take all we can for ourselves. We can work, worry, and waste away our lives. Or, we can choose to believe the truth of God’s Word. God is good. Because He is good, I know that He cares and knows what is best. I can call to Him knowing full well that He is a good Father who longs to give good gifts to us – His precious children.
