Review of You Are a Writer by Jeff Goins

If you’re a writer like me, you may feel like it’s us against the world. Jeff Goins reminds us that our greatest barrier to being heard is the person we see in the mirror. You Are a Writer calls us to simply admit that we are writers and starting writing. Not that this is an easy task, but Goins is an encourager and guide as we consider writing our next pages.

Goins asks insightful questions and has peppered this work with a compelling voice for the reader to get writing and keep creating. He puts the focus back on the passion behind the writer which gives a springboard for future influence. “When you stop writing for readers’ affections, your work will affect more people.” According to Goins, writers need to focus on “doing what gives you life and not trying to live up to others’ expectations.” In a media-saturated culture, we put so much weight on “followers” and what other people think to the extent that we try to join every possible media source to present our message. Writers are put at ease when we realize that we can’t be everywhere. “You can create or react. But you can’t do both. Choose wisely.”

Readers will also find some seriously-needed words on the distractions to and directions for writing. For instance, social media maintenance is really just “stalling” or procrastinating. Fears hold us back from actually finishing a work. Anxiously waiting on editors and publishers takes away from time with our work. As Goins says, “It’s time to stop waiting to be asked and start creating.” In that effort, we learn about what it means to create a platform, brand and channels for our voices to be heard. Goins presents these and other simple, practical points followed by his own personal stories and struggles. Reading this work is like a good conversation with a friend as you go for a stroll or sip some coffee.

Writers need to know the hard truth. “There are no big breaks. Only tiny drips of effort that lead to waves of momentum.” So we must consider what we’re about to do. Are we ready to put in the work? Are we ready to see ourselves as writers? Are we ready to be courageous? Because “…whether or not the world hears your message – whether you leave the impact you were born to make – is entirely up to you.” If you’re ready, then one of the best first steps you can take is picking up You Are a Writer.
